GRIGOR DIMITROV – First quarter-final at Roland-Garros
World number 10 Grigor Dimitrov has reached the semi-finals in each of the other four majors on tour but this is his first quarter-final at Roland-Garros, with clay his weakest surface. The 33-year-old overcame an out-of-sorts and irritable Hubert Hurkacz on Sunday to claim his first top 10 win since taking three in a row in Miami: Hurkacz, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, before a heavy defat to Sinner.
Dimitrov set a career-high ATP world ranking of third after claiming his most prestigious of eight career titles at the ATP Finals in 2017.
JANNIK SINNER – Australian Open champion
22-year-old Jannik Sinner will become the world number one for the first time in his career if he reaches the Roland-Garros final, in any case, or if he significantly out-performs Novak Djokovic. Both options look on the cards after a blistering start to his campaign in Paris but he was momentarily shocked by enigmatic cult hero Corentin Moutet on Sunday, avoiding an early bagel in his first dropped set of the tournament before recovering well in four.
Sinner beat Grigor Dimitrov to lift the Miami Open title back in March, his third title this season after Rotterdam and a maiden Grand Slam triumph in Melbourne.
GRIGOR DIMITROV VS JANNIK SINNER PREDICTION
This looks a tough match-up for Grigor Dimitrov, who was there for what will one day be a hallowed moment in the Italian’s career. Sinner was sick in a bin during their Beijing Open quarter-final last October and he has been a different animal since, coincidentally of course, going on to win that title and four more to take his career title up to 13.
Dimitrov beat the Italian in three sets in their only previous encounter on clay back in 2020 but Sinner’s Miami Open victory in March was a convincing third on the spin. Take Sinner to make that four here.
