Martin Truex Jr. will step away from full-time competition in the NASCAR Cup Series at the conclusion of the 2024 season, but it doesn’t mean he will be gone from the sport. Truex will stick around and run several races in 2025. One of those races will likely be the 2025 Daytona 500, and Truex already knows which car number he’ll drive in the big event next year.
“Yeah, it’s either going to be the No. 56 or No. 78,” Truex said at playoff media day.”The No. 78 being our championship number, which is a special one. And the No. 56 was always my number, so we’ll see.”
Truex said he will run the 2025 Daytona 500 and while he doesn’t know the exact details, he says the deal is “all but done.” 23XI Racing has been the most likely landing spot for Truex, and it could include a familiar face. According to Truex, his former crew chief, Cole Pearn, has said he would be on top of the box during his effort.
It will be disappointing to see Truex leave NASCAR as a full-time driver, but there is much to be excited about moving forward. There will be plenty of opportunities for Truex, and driving one of his old car numbers with his former crew chief will be special. The 2025 Daytona 500 will be exciting, and Truex will likely be there with a familiar face alongside him.
